To be honest, if anything "planet" itself is an archaic term, but it's one that is too engraved in our public consciousness to do away with.

The terrestrial worlds, gas giants, ice giants, and... ugh, dwarf planets have such a staggering degree of differences that trying to paint them into one (or two) boxes isn't really the most sensible thing to do. Not to mention that there are seemingly loads of other types of planets orbiting other stars that are wholly exotic to anything we have in the solar system.
