Kagami is a child who first uses it accidentally and initially sets out to undo the damage he's done, and then there's a timeskip to when he's become comfortable with the idea of using it on a wider scale. The reason Light's descent is way faster in the official release is probably due to the pacing required for a weekly chapter release. The official version does a better job of establishing the tone of the entire story (a prolonged battle of cold wits between two unhinged geniuses) to new readers very quickly.
