The only reason he decided to join in to stop Liquid was because he trusted Roy and he wanted to save the world. He could have just said no. Sounds pretty heroic to me. That's the point though, you are meant to see him as a hero, even the in-game universe are meant to views his actions as heroic, but that's all just a side effect to Solid Snake who in his mind is just serving his purpose and completing his jobs.
