Lol no they didn't. If anything, the move to open world games has killed gaming. Now every game had to be a massive project that takes like a decade in development. And are often still shitty and glitchy when they finally get released
I gotta say, I love the Assassin's Creed games, but they're getting waaaaay fucking bloated. I know I'm in the minority wanting shorter games but fuck off with these massive 100-hour+ sagas. Took me about 170 hours to get 100% trophies in AC Odyssey and I'm at about 200 hours into Valhalla with no end in sight. Full disclosure: I'm sure I could burn through the story missions and be done with it, but I have a touch of OCD or some shit with in-game maps and feel absolutely compelled to track down all the little collectibles.

Valhalla is going to be my last AC game for the foreseeable future, which bums me out because I genuinely enjoy these games but I can't keep myself from collectible hunting so I guess I'll completely avoid these games in the future

Skyrim is an open-world game done right (or at least done better). It's fun to explore. They don't litter the mini-map with treasures, you find treasures and shit through questing and exploring naturally. I've spent well over 1000 hours in Skyrim and I'd go back to it any day. The way they present the mini map and tie trophies to collectibles in AC is fucking annoying and turns playing the game into a chore.

Again I realize some people can probably ignore this shit, so it's partly my own doing because my brain is wired to track these things down, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating
