POLL: Best Game of 2001

Following on from my previous 2011 poll, this is another year that was absolutely firing on all cylinders, to the point that games like Devil May Cry, Pikmin, Silent Hill 2 & Conker's BFD are in the 'other' category.

Paper Mario.

It weird to think that Paper Mario came out in the same year as all these games.

Personally, I'd be inclined to agree considering it didn't release for most of the world (myself included) until 2001, although technically was released in Japan at the tail end of 2000.

Halo certainly changed the game for the FPS genre, but I'd argue that GTA 3 had a larger impact on the industry as a whole.

Other games used an open world design before GTA, but that game set a blueprint for those types of games that is largely still in use to this day.

I'm genuinely surprised SSB or Paper Mario aren't crushing the polls considering this is NintendoFaqs

My vote goes to MGS2 though

Still holds up well to this day from a gameplay perspective and Kojima was years ahead of his time with the story

FFX is a good choice too

I love GTA but 3 aged like milk

I'd buy at least four games on that poll before I'd touch Paper Mario.

Actually, I did buy at least four games on that poll, yet never bought Paper Mario.

Not to mention the dozens of games that would fall under "Other" that'd I'd rather play over Paper Mario.

Paper mario isn't even that great. I don't think there is a game on that list I own other than Paper Mario - and I only have that because I bought a N64 games at garage sales in the early 2000s

I remember in the early and mid 2000s when gaming nerds really hated halo, too. I guess it's more of a cool thinf to hate games when they're newer and more relevant

Anyway, this was tough between halo, MGS2, smash, and FFX. Went with halo

I was playing Smash at the time so I had to vote that. I liked Luigi's Mansion as well, but it's kind of hard to compare some wildly different games and LM didn't even have multiplayer. If I had to pick again I would probably go with Halo though because heck, it was a decent shooter (mo' action), was multiplayer, and if I recall correctly I guess it was online (but I didn't play it online).

Lol no they didn't. If anything, the move to open world games has killed gaming. Now every game had to be a massive project that takes like a decade in development. And are often still shitty and glitchy when they finally get released

I gotta say, I love the Assassin's Creed games, but they're getting waaaaay fucking bloated. I know I'm in the minority wanting shorter games but fuck off with these massive 100-hour+ sagas. Took me about 170 hours to get 100% trophies in AC Odyssey and I'm at about 200 hours into Valhalla with no end in sight. Full disclosure: I'm sure I could burn through the story missions and be done with it, but I have a touch of OCD or some shit with in-game maps and feel absolutely compelled to track down all the little collectibles.

Valhalla is going to be my last AC game for the foreseeable future, which bums me out because I genuinely enjoy these games but I can't keep myself from collectible hunting so I guess I'll completely avoid these games in the future

Skyrim is an open-world game done right (or at least done better). It's fun to explore. They don't litter the mini-map with treasures, you find treasures and shit through questing and exploring naturally. I've spent well over 1000 hours in Skyrim and I'd go back to it any day. The way they present the mini map and tie trophies to collectibles in AC is fucking annoying and turns playing the game into a chore.

Again I realize some people can probably ignore this shit, so it's partly my own doing because my brain is wired to track these things down, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating

Other than SSBM, none of the titles in the poll even interested me.

Had to go look thru a list of 2001 titles to see what else came out that year. All of these seem better than several of the poll options:

LoZ Oracle of Seasons/Ages
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Zone of the Enders
Golden Sun
Ico

Hmm... SSBM is still my favorite 2001 game. But I'll toss an Other vote to Zone of the Enders. Underrated unknown gem. And a fantastic soundtrack, too.

I definitely don't have time for all the shit they put in open world games now so, for me, it's all for nothing. Hell, I started witcher 3 like 3 months ago and haven't done much of anything lol. I just think that mainly all this time between titles is beyond ridiculous. I'm old school. I'm fine with having a solid 30-70 hour playthrough of something. I don't really need something that I have to pour a thousand hours into to feel like I've gotten the full experience. 6-10 years between games in the same series is absurd, really, especially when it's closer to 10. I mean, skyrim came out in 2011 and it's gonna be probably 2024 or 2025 before we see the next one. If we go on the same time frame for the one after then I'll be in my 50s when the next one comes out lol. I may not even live to see the 8th installment. I get they work on other games, though, so they aren't the best example
