Uh, actually you've proven in your assessment of "what the flag means" that you very much can, because it has already been done.

The American flag representing the troops, "freedom," and all other positive associations people hold with this country has long been the standard accepted interpretation of the flag. You can challenge that perception, but don't accept a warm reception in doing so.

This is a case where it would be prudent to choose one's battles. The most important fight is the fight to be free from brutality. You're not going to win the hearts of the people if you're simultaneously trying to challenge them on what they hold dear.

But again, people know that creates conflict and conflict itself is the goal. Instead of unanimously being against police brutality, we've placed America on trial and people defending America have become involuntary opponents of progress. It's a beautiful mess which keeps the little people fighting and the parasitic corporations fat with the lifeblood of a nation.
