I would have ended it at the end of book 1.
i've only read the first book and the movie definitely didn't cover all of the material in there. am i missing something here?

The the original book is broken up into 3 "books". It would be
after they escape. I'm not saying just chop off the last 30ish minutes and it's a better movie, it would definitely have to be shot differently than how it was to feel more complete.
No matter what we wouldn't get a conclusive end, but maybe something a little better than what we got. Like come the fuck on
