Same here. But when I tell them the plot they just say they already know that and the pacing is slow

Honestly, the theatre experience is the best, especially for movies like these.

I thought it was pretty great. Bit of a slow burn, but exceptionally well produced.

My complaint with the '84 version was that it really felt like a lot was being crammed into a short period of screen time, and a friend that's read the source literature concurred.

All in all, the storyline seems much better suited for multiple installments.

I hear it being compared to the last blade runner in that regard. Which, if true, makes it the kind of movie that you either see in theaters or not at all.

It's a lot like the past blade runner, yes. Most of the movie was a cool looking shot with some cool music. It's almost like if the whole movie was a trailer.

Yeah I really liked the Blade Runner Movie and I was happy I saw it in theaters.

I liked dune, but it felt like a slog sometimes. It would've felt like less of a slog in theaters, though.

It's just that kind of movie. Also see: Dunkirk, Gravity, etc.

do you understand that it's only half of the story? the climax / conclusion will happen in part 2

also a whole lot of stuff happened in part 1, so im not sure what "a plotless movie" is even supposed to mean

"It's okay if it sucks and is boring because the next one will be better" is abullshit defense of anything.

Reminds me of Man of Steel defenders.

If a movie sucks then it sucks.

Fellowship of the Ring managed to be part one of a story that had pretty much no conclusion in of itself.

And it's a kickass movie. Just be better at writing and directing. You don't have to be one or the other

Christ even Death Note managed to pull that off with its movies. If Dune is worse than fucking Death Note, that says a lot.

i disagree with the claim that it sucks and is boring (i loved it). i also challenge TC's assertion that it is "plotless" -- a whole bunch of shit happens that advances the story (this was the 2nd part of my post that you seemed to ignore)

i feel like people who found this 'boring' probably didn't like BR:2049 either. i get how some folks might find it slow, because a lot of what i found engrossing were the little details about the world / lore shown in each scene. i loved seeing stuff like the ships extending their landing gear, for example, because lore and world building make me happy. but for folks who don't care about that stuff, i can see why they might find the movie slow. but it's certainly not "plotless"

I don't think it was boring, but I do feel it lacks conclusive elements to make it feel worthwhile narratively to watch the film by itself rather than waiting for Part II to come out and watching them together.

It was very interesting. It just wasn't a nonstop action story. The trailer shows a lot of action but the actual movie is very slow most of the time. But I liked it. It's a very cool world. I want to read the books now

Yep, it was a lot like Blade Runner which I was very excited for, but ended up pretty disappointed with. Exceptional imagery, atmospherics, vibes, etc, but not much in the way of compelling characters, dialogue, or plot.

Sounds a lot like the book. Its been a long time since Ive read it, but I remember the story being more geopolitical intrigue than action, especially the first part.

Yeh its kinda funny cuz ol Hangry Herbert pitched the book as more of a shoot em up sci fi too, then just dropped this work that was far more about its ecological, economical, and political themes

I was enthralled by the book beginning to end. The movie not so much. Hell, I would rather rewatch the Lynch version.

My only complaint is that it really isn't a complete movie. As in you don't feel any kind of closure at all. As someone said earlier, LotR (which I'm not a fan of the movies mind you) each felt like complete movies. This kinda just ends abruptly, with a pretty terrible last line lol it's the nature of trying to adapt a 800 page epic I guess but that doesn't excuse it imo.

That being said, I loved the movie overall.

i feel like that would have been the case no matter what happened in "part 1". where could the films have been split such that the first part felt "complete"? not necessarily directing that question at you, SP, just throwing it out there

i do agree with you that the weakest part of the film is that it needs part 2 to feel whole.

with LotR that was easy because the books were already split in a way that made sense.

I would have ended it at the end of book 1. Harkonnens taking Arakis would have made for a decent ending. And fleshed out Dr. Yueh's character more.

I mean no matter what we'd get some sort of cliffhanger but the way it ended was just bleh.

so right at the point where paul and jessica are taken hostage? so their fate would be a cliffhanger? i still feel like that would have been unsatisfactory WRT a 'conclusive' end to pt 1

The the original book is broken up into 3 "books". It would be after they escape. I'm not saying just chop off the last 30ish minutes and it's a better movie, it would definitely have to be shot differently than how it was to feel more complete.

No matter what we wouldn't get a conclusive end, but maybe something a little better than what we got. Like come the fuck on "this is only the beginning" smh
