I think the point Rock is making is that you shouldn't HAVE to worry about having to buy a card or delete your info.
Also, I have to pay sales tax on PSN cards, so it costs me not only the money in gas to go pick up said card, but then I have to pay taxes.
But yeah, by all accounts the PSN hack made getting info super easy because they didn't encrypt anything. Obviously, there's some level of risk when you put your credit card anywhere online, but PSN allowed for an elevated risk.
Also, Xbox Live didn't fully go down, but it was suffering outages for about 2 weeks in 2008.
