Ads are definitely the worst thing about XBL. The new dashboard is a mess because of it. Sucks they're going to take that to the next level and start throwing them into apps.

I'd be mad if they put this in Netflix. I mean there I'm paying an Xbox Live subscription fee AND a Netflix subscription fee, so putting in commercials on top of that would be pretty asinine.
But I wouldn't get TOO mad, I'd just watch Netflix on PS3 instead.

Don't forget that your also already paying for internet service! You need 3 subscriptions just to watch Netflix on 360, how ridiculous is that.

Boycott cable. No. It's like if you have to pay for cable AND ON TOP OF IT pay for a channel (HBO, Starz) and still have commercials.
I don't have those channels so idk if they have commercials but if they do they're just as stupid.
HBO has a couple commercials in between shows for their own shows, but that's it. They never show non-first party ads, and they never interrupt a show for it.

I stopped using XBL a long time ago. There are two things I will accept:
1) Paid subscriptions, no ads. 2) Free, but with ads.
If XBL was free, I would not be thrilled but I know money has to be made somewhere. This is just greed, pure and simple, and people are too weak to stand up to it.
Paid subscriptions that still include heavy advertising will never earn my patronage. Ever.
It's less that people are "too weak to stand up to it" and more "people just don't care because the ads don't actually get in the way of anything but a few apps that nobody uses."

Just buy a gift card for PSN at Gamestop, Walgreens, hell I think Circle K has them? That's what I do and guess what, no worries! Also Joyrock is right they were encrypted.
And XBL was down for like several weeks in late '07- early '08 I believe

Also, I have to pay sales tax on PSN cards, so it costs me not only the money in gas to go pick up said card, but then I have to pay taxes.
But yeah, by all accounts the PSN hack made getting info super easy because they didn't encrypt anything. Obviously, there's some level of risk when you put your credit card anywhere online, but PSN allowed for an elevated risk.
Also, Xbox Live didn't fully go down, but it was suffering outages for about 2 weeks in 2008.

One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list.
One other point to clarify is from this weekend’s press conference. While the passwords that were stored were not “encrypted,” they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function. There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form. For a description of the difference between encryption and hashing, follow this link.
To reiterate a few other security measures for your information: Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. Personal info was lost, yeah. Credit cards were encrypted, though. Hacks happen on all systems, though, the 360 included. There was a big thing about it a while back, too.

'All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network,' Sony said in a statement. 'The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken.
'The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.'
