As for the escalation of prices, yeah, that's an issue. Comics are struggling in much the same way that music did a decade ago. Sales are shrinking dramatically while the cost to manufacture comics is rising. Rather than embrace a digital model, Marvel has raised the price by a dollar on some books, which caused fans of those books to drop a $2.99 book.

I think this is the reason DC is going to come out on top after all this, at least for a while. Marvel refuses to embrace digital out of some "loyalty" to brick and more stores (at least that's what they claim). Unfortunately, nowadays, most people have to drive 30-60 minutes to actually get to a comic shop. I have to drive 40.

Meanwhile, DC is putting everything at $1.99 online, and keeping all regular sized books at $2.99 in stores, unlike Marvel who's put half their books at $3.99, and doesn't reduce the price for digital at all. Funny, since Marvel pioneered the digital distribution, but refuses to change their policies. And as for comic shops, DC is the one enacting a new distributor return policy on unsold books, not Marvel, no matter how much smack Marvel wants to talk.
