Would you say that this is essential knowledge for everyone? How about those who don't drive because they don't need to? Then again, lots of drivers have AAA.

That said, I've heard of college graduates being unable to understand how to use a stapler and so they would ask someone else to staple for them, so I see the point you're trying to make. I just don't think that knowing how to change a tire is completely essential to typical life in all situations. And yes, I've been taught how to replace a tire, although I've never needed to actually do it. It is good knowledge to have, but again, it's one of those things you could go through life without knowing about it.
