Always have nearly no practical knowledge and in some case no general knowledge? I mean why, one can't prevent the other, unless none of those people are actually smart and spend 100% of their free time in their books (I know some do but I doubt it's the majority).
Just asking because yesterday I was talking to someone who got the highest grade in his school last year but had no idea who the hell Achilles was (I was talking about the Iliad with some other girl while he was listening), I mean it's not the most common knowledge ever but I thought most people know who the hell Achilles is, especially because of that Achilles' Heel thing, he had no idea what the War of Troy was either. Anyway, from what I've seen he's far from being the only one in this case, quite a ton of '' smart '' people seem to be pretty stupid out of the classroom. -- Best LPer ever, Gix ! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt5YKmP7ecY ... Not always. I have a fair bit of practical knowledge, I think, and I got a 3950/4000 on the GED. Granted, that thing is SAT easy-mode. I'll get back to you once I get those scores in a couple of months since I need them for Uni.

No, people just find any example they can of a person with good grades or a reputation for being "smart" being wrong about something and harp on it. Some people don't know some stuff, it's that simple, "smart" people are no exception. Most of the people I knew in high school who got good grades were generally intelligent and competent in many situations, but I know that because I knew them instead of just following a silly pre-conceived notion that they MUST be dumb in some way.

Would you say that this is essential knowledge for everyone? How about those who don't drive because they don't need to? Then again, lots of drivers have AAA. That said, I've heard of college graduates being unable to understand how to use a stapler and so they would ask someone else to staple for them, so I see the point you're trying to make. I just don't think that knowing how to change a tire is completely essential to typical life in all situations. And yes, I've been taught how to replace a tire, although I've never needed to actually do it. It is good knowledge to have, but again, it's one of those things you could go through life without knowing about it. -- Zachnorn Everything = overrated. http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/4503/qrcode857546.th.png ... Really depends on the sort of person. In regards to high school, most people I've known were legitimately smart. There certainly were a few exceptions, though. Those tended to be the types that weren't necessary smart so much as obsessively hard workers; those who would spend 2 hours every night on each AP Physics and Calculus assignment and ridiculous amounts of time freaking out about every test.
