A more accurate way (at least historically and without the exaggerated versions of fiction) to phrase the whole "captain" thing is that he should not be leaving the ship as long as there's someone else on it. Basically, he should be the last one off.
If everyone got off, there's no problem. Why waste captains like that for no reason?
