A more accurate way (at least historically and without the exaggerated versions of fiction) to phrase the whole "captain" thing is that he should not be leaving the ship as long as there's someone else on it. Basically, he should be the last one off.
If everyone got off, there's no problem. Why waste captains like that for no reason?
Look, I would be lying if I said I knew anything about captains that can't be derived from Star Trek or my dad's stories about his service as a sailor in Vietnam (he joined the Navy because he was afraid of being drafted into the Army, since the Navy was much safer).
