We start with Ash versus Dude. I wonder who's going to win. Ash sends out Glalie and Grovyle, and Dude counters with Charizard and Quilava. What really confuses me here, what really confuses me here, is that Max then says "Ash chose the perfect pokemon."
Sarcastically? Please say Max said it sarcastically or I will lose the last tiny bit of faith I have in the Pokémon anime writers.
It wasn't sarcastic at all, at least not as far as I remember. He said it pretty normally.

Ash sends out Pikachu. Katie withdraws Golduck and sends out Dugtrio, so Ash withdraws Pikachu and sends out Swelnoofcoursehedoesn't, he keeps Pikachu out against something that can obliterate it, and Dugtrio wins easily. Fortunately, Ash's Glalie defeats Dugtrio easily.
Not that the writers were thinking about it at the time but, Dugtrio can have Arena Trap.
I actually did think about this, but Ash didn't even try to recall Pikachu and no one mentioned arena trap, so I'm inclined to consider it Ash being stupid again.
