I have met very few of my actual friends at parties/class... tons of acquaintances and "hey you're that guy from that place," but friends? I get most of them from random coincidental meetings where we just click and become friends. And then those random friends have other friends/girlfriends/etc. that you meet over time by hanging out with them, and repeat recursively.
this
the entire thing is like a huge fibonacci sequence
most of my best friends came from clicking with someone down the hall from me, or joining a small club and getting close to them - or a friend's girlfriend's friend, or something
acquaintances are important because you can use your connections through them to find real friends
that said, I didn't really "click" with anyone til october of my freshman year. just gotta work with it
