I certainly can.
If you want to add more specific things you're asked, that's different; but if I ask you to do something reasonable like empty out your basket, or set the coupons on the counter instead of the belt, there's no cause to get mad at me.
Even less so when, say, I ask to see your ID to verify a check, or when I ask for ID for cough syrup/cooking sherry/other things.
