- Talking on your phone while checking out

- Waiting until after something is rung up/bagged to ask for it to be done differently

- Getting mad at the Cashier because your card or ID cannot be accepted

- Getting mad at the Cashier when they ask you to do something

- Going into an express lane with well over 12 items

- Leaving mid-transaction to grab something you forgot

- Making people behind you wait as you dig out change when you have enough cash in hand already

I certainly can.

If you want to add more specific things you're asked, that's different; but if I ask you to do something reasonable like empty out your basket, or set the coupons on the counter instead of the belt, there's no cause to get mad at me.

Even less so when, say, I ask to see your ID to verify a check, or when I ask for ID for cough syrup/cooking sherry/other things.

In b4 "opening a soda and drinking before paying" I really don't want to see that stupid topic again.

I occasionally have nightmares about when I worked in retail. Literal, wake up sweating and shaking nightmares.

Actually, the place I worked had a terrible manager who would never make sure the register was properly stocked and the nearest bank was 20 minutes away, so people who paid in exact change were awesome there.

Yes, exactly. Expecting anyone but yourself to be responsible for your kids is ridiculous. I can't tell if this will come off as sarcastic or not so I will add that I am completely serious. That caused me more irritation than anything. Especially since I worked at a damned brewery.

I actually didn't mind this so much as a parcel, except for that they would sometimes roll around and hit cars, and we as parcels would get blamed. I also had a couple of times people set carts at the top of an enbankment where a tiny nudge would sent it rolling straight into traffic :/

Not controlling your kids

I actually don't mind this. Kids will be kids. What I DO mind is the parents that just give into them, while I want to give the ones that just ignore the kids a medal(because honestly that's the best way to deal with the issue).

Why is counting change bad? I do it all the time... =(

I'm talking about customers that spend an extra minute digging around for that extra change, that extra dollar bill, when there is a full lane behind them. I'm not above "not noticing" that they're doing this if they hand me enough right off the bat >.>;

Picking a product up and not putting it back where you got it when you set it down.

Taking the packaging off the skateboards and riding them around the store. You deserve to bust your ass and I will not feel sorry for you when it happens, in all likelihood I will laugh my ass off if I see it happen.

For that matter, riding the bikes in the store.

Complaining that you have to purchase the ammo at the sporting goods counter. No you cannot take it up front to pay for it when you pay for your groceries.

Complaining that I asked for your id when you asked to see a gun, if you aren't 18 or with a parent you aren't touching it.

And I completely agree with not controlling your kids, it makes my day when I see a well behaved kid, but I don't see them too often.

AHAHAHAHA Oh how I wish that were true. It's actually usually the other way around - The Old Women usually look at what they're doing with a few exceptions, the young ones just assume they're right >.<

Bringing up 30 coupons, a third of which are expired, and arguing about every single coupon. When you discover that a third of your coupons are expired, you ask to see a manager.

Honestly, with those situations, if the customer doesn't do it repeatedly I'll just give them the expired coupons. They're usually not a big deal, and it makes everyone happier(and my bosses prefer I do it that way).

I once heard an anecdote about an older man who was accustomed to stores having spitoons in them. I guess this was common way way back in the day. Anyway, when they removed the spitoons from the stores, he took that as a sign where he could just spit wherever he pleased. He was also fairly wealthy, so rather than risk losing his business, a lot of the stores brought back spitoons just for him.

Not stopping when you see someone pushing a ton of carts, whether it's outside or inside the store. Apparently some people think "I'm the customer, I get the right of way" can trump the laws of physics and make those dozen carts stop on a dime on a downhill slope with no warning.

I've done this quite a few times, but when it's like 3am and there is literally no one behind me. Normally I'd agree, though.

This one pisses me off far more as a customer wanting to go through that lane than it ever did as an employee.

This topic is great, lots of gold here.

- People taking their cart out to the very edge of the parking lot when they only have one item and it's not heavy nor are they disabled.
- People asking me if items are gonna set the alarm off at the door. I understand if it's something that can trigger the alarm, but when has a phone card EVER triggered one?
- People who assume that a store will take any coupon, even if it says it's exclusive to one store only

opening a soda and drinking before paying

Sadly, that's how my sister lost her job. Customer does it, that's fine and dandy, but if an associate does it, it's apparently stealing.

People have this weird idea that absolutely everything will set off alarms. Keys, cell phones, jewelry, they seem to think the alarms exist solely to annoy them instead of being there to, you know, go off for things that aren't in the possession of every single person who comes through the door.

Love this topic, oh my God. So many of these things are so true. The only point I don't agree with is the cell phone thing. It really never bothered me when a customer was talking on his/her cellphone because it just meant that I didn't have to entertain them.

As for things that always bothered me:
-Arguing the price of the item. So many customers have brought up a plant that clearly says like $6.99 on the tag, but once I ring it up they say something along the lines of, "wait, that was by a sign that said $4.99. Why is it $6.99?" I reply that it must've been a mistake and then a few customers have made me call a manager over. The manager then proceeds to look at the tag on the plant and tells the customer they are wrong.
-Insisting that we carry an item that has never been inside of the store.
-People who pre-pack their grocery bags. I have to unload everything to scan it and then put it all back.
-Parents who let their kids try to help me scan/give me items out of the cart. Kids just grab the most random s*** and give it to me while I am trying to perfectly pack a bag of groceries. "Aw, look, they're helping you!" Oh yeah? Get your kid out from under my legs before I destroy them.

Oh yeah. This is always annoying. It was even worse when I wasn't a cashier and I'd be the person that got called to check on this stuff and sometimes the customer would go to "show me the sign" and then they'd be incapable of understanding why their claim that they found a $40 lamp on a pallet full of pop doesn't mean that the sign saying that the pop is $2 also means that the lamp costs that much.

Well I stock the shelves so I have a completely different set of bad customers!

-People who ask "do you work here?" when I'm stocking an aisle.

-People who take from the shelf when I am currently stocking that item. Just take from my cart and save me the trouble!

-People who can't seem to grasp the concept that just because another store carries an item, we should too. If you bought it at Target then f***ing go back to Target.

-People who find an old friend and decide to stop right where I'm stocking to have a 45 minute conversation.

-People who decide to cut me off with their grocery cart when I'm pulling a really heavy pallet across the store. Instead of stopping to wait for 5 seconds they dart in front of me and force me to ram into my pallet so I can stop it again.

There are so many more but I'll leave it at 5

This is exactly what I was saying about pushing carts! Some people have no idea that their self-importance doesn't change how objects move. The worst ever was a woman who let her son (probably like 4 years old) dart in front of me, forcing me to stop suddenly, then just watched as he did it again and again, either darting in front himself or flinging his hands under the wheels or other similar ****. Then she got pissed that I had the audacity to tell her and her son to be careful.

Am I the only person that this happens to when you don't work somewhere? It's absurd how many people ask me a question about where to find something at Gamestop, FYE, or Toys R Us. I'm usually wearing a t-shirt and jeans too. And it's not like I'm wearing something that's in the same color pattern as the place. One woman at TRU asked me where I could find something when I was wearing a Mario t-shirt and khaki shorts.

Ruining my IPM's. I had a lot of patience for a lot of stuff, but don't. touch. my. IPM's.
(IPM's = items per minute, and if you made them drop I cried inside.

The biggest ways to do that are by leaving in the middle of an order to go pick something up and buying a bunch of individual pieces of esoteric produce that no one ever buys ever so I have to look up the PLU because I don't know the number for endive and you only bought one head of it so for 20 seconds of work I wind up scanning .2 pounds of endive which is .2 items and that's the equivalent of .6 items per minute argh

Maybe I shouldn't have cared so much but focusing on my IPM's was pretty much the only thing keeping me sane in my cheesy retail job :(

I understand, I was only a cashier for a year before moving to Customer Service, but IPH (which is what it is at walmart) was the only thing I had as a cashier, I was the fastest, but it was only fun when I actually had a friend who was the fastest before me to compete with. After he was gone, there was no one to compete with, so I was easily the fastest. Even if people weren't keeping up with me, I would just hit total to halt the count, so that it wouldn't interfere with my IPH. I never had anyone complain about hitting total.

To be fair, this is totally excusable during big holiday sales. I've both worked and shopped at so many stores during Christmas, Labor Day, etc., that never change the tags on items, and instead just stack them all by some sign with the sale price... Which half the time is never put in the computer until the sale is almost over, if at all.

Oh one more thing from being a cashier. I got asked like twenty times a day if "I was open." Sometimes I would be ringing up a customer and sometimes I would be standing there looking out into the store for a customer to be done shopping. I don't know if they think I just get paid by standing at a register and tell people that I'm closed.

Working at Trader Joe's pretty much means you are a cashier, stocker, and cart pusher. There are no individually assigned jobs, so I got all of the annoyances of the other positions as well.

Cart pushing was especially terrible because no one gave a f***. This one customer was literally coming right at me and expected me to move out of the way.

To be fair, it's damn annoying when people start unloading and you're not open. Maybe you're counting your drawer or going on break once you're done with that customer. I see the nuisance, but it's better than someone starting to unload on your belt only for you to tell them you're closed.
