this gen, WRPGs have been awesome. also we see more and more rpg elements popping up in various genres, so you can enjoy a lot of what makes RPGs good in other games.
I don't think there was tons of inoovation in the PS1 JRPG era, you had the occasional game that did a really good job mixing it up, like Grandia, but for the most part I can't get through most JRPGs because of how similarly they all play out.
