I don't think so. I've been a longtime fan of JRPGs, and I don't have much in the way of praise for XIII or XIII-2's battle system. They aren't my thing at all. The battle system may be fast, and it might be flashy, but it isn't engaging. I've always said that XIII would have been better as a full on action RPG instead of the weird hybrid it ended up as, and I think that holds true for XIII-2 more than ever. I just don't feel involved in what happens in battles. I could describe it as "soulless" and "lifeless," but I'll just say that it isn't personally for me. It extends beyond the battle system, too. It's the whole package.
I'm a big fan of turn-based battles -- Dragon Quest, Lost Odyssey, Persona, Shadow Hearts -- and that's just not what this is. It doesn't need to be in order to be good, because I've liked previous FF games just fine, and they aren't strict turn-based affairs, but XIII/XIII-2 don't do it for me. I'll gladly sacrifice the speed and flash for a set of simple but interesting mechanics.
