If neither of those things happen then what's the fucking point? Especially since it makes the rebels look incompetent if they steal the blueprints but don't do shit with them.

The point is to tell the story of stealing those blueprints. The rebels then do do something with the blueprints, in the movie's sequel. What an odd criticism.
