He could have refused the presidency and said that his entire campaign was to prove that he could win and he had no interest in giving up so much power and money to become president. He didn't. He didn't despite frequently unfavorable reception. Why would he stop now? It could only make things worse for him since even if he was exonerated -- like Flynn was -- there would be the specter of collusion from stepping down that the Eriks of the world would point to as evidence.
