Definitely would've prefered the dumb $5 cup thing, but of course that wouldn't stop anyone since like you said, anyone with the tiniest of brains could just bring their own cup, or pick up one of the dozens laying around. But those aren't really parties, more like really bad clubs that only first years go to.
