I always always always provide when I'm a host because I feel like it's tacky as hell to invite people to party at your place and then force them to bring their own drinks.

This is different if you're hosting something where you don't know who will be showing up I suppose, but I still provide plenty of booze.

When I have big parties, everyone just brings whatever they like. I usually bring the most because I'm alcoholic and more well off financially, and then other people bring the stuff they like. We all drink whatever we want and share each others things and it's a good time because no one cares who is drinking what.

BYOB always needs to be catered for unless it's with a group of mates you know will take care of their end. Even then I'll always grab a keg a couple bottles of wine and a crate of beer minimum.

Nothing worse than trying to have a good time while someone's whinging they don't have anything to drink.

Well, it's byob in the sense that it was strongly hinted to bring your own **** and it's kinda common sense to do so. The pregame is for a farewell, so that's why the host wants to have some stuff to provide, but we disagree on how much exactly to provide.

In college I always provided enough assuming no one would bring anything. Maybe 20% of alcohol overall was brought by guests so that was necessary.

Now in adulthood I've found I only need to provide about 50% of the overall alcohol. About 1 beer per person and 1 handle per 20 people, and the guests will bring plenty to fill in the rest and have left overs.

Ultimately it's your party, and it's your fault if it ends up being weak or disappointing for some or all guests due to lack of alcohol. Or food, or ice, or whatever.

ffmasterjose posted...

Like this. You can say this all you want, but you can't avoid the fact that if alcohol runs out, people leave your party and it's less fun. Same if they get hungry and leave.

You can blame them all you want but it's still your party getting fucked. Just provide the damn stuff and have a good party.

If it's just a pregame you don't need much, 1-3 drinks per person? I'd get a case of beer and maybe offer whatever bottle I already had, or vice versa. The main event is elsewhere.

BUT if it's a pregame I'm not sure why you'd expect many people to BYOB, for exactly the same reason. What, is someone gonna bring a couple of those single shot bottles of tequila or something? Nah they're just gonna show up.

In college most people were under 21 so that's part of it too. And most people brought crap like crat or pbr. If that's not the kind of vibe you want at your party then you have to provide.

BYOB can definitely be a different category altogether from a party though. It's like the difference between a dinner party and a potluck. And I don't know about y'all but I don't usually go to a potluck hungry.

I always provide a lot, and my guests are cool and always bring something. We usually wind up with a ton of food and drinks and it turns into a great time. I rarely drink outside of parties and I always have a full bar ready to go that's mainly the result of friends bringing extra provisions to our get-togethers.

As the host, my rule is to assume nothing and have everyone covered, whether it's BYOB or not. If you have tons of extra stuff, congrats - you'll have a great night and enough to do it again next time. It's always better to be seen as a gracious host who throws a bomb party than to risk having a lame party.

When a friend does this for college football weekends for like 4-6 of us he provides a keg on draft, plus like 12 bottles in the fridge plus a few spirits and mixers laying around.

He does it every weekend so a lot of stuff just rolls over each week and then people turn up with either nothing or a 6 pack every now and again

Maybe they are inviting girls to their party who aren't old enough to buy alcohol, who want to get drunk and have sex.

Guess my college had less shitty parties

I mean we did have the shitty frat bro gatekeeping where once you got inside you got to wait for 30 minutes in a crowd of people to get half a cup of warm keystone. Definitely would've prefered the dumb $5 cup thing, but of course that wouldn't stop anyone since like you said, anyone with the tiniest of brains could just bring their own cup, or pick up one of the dozens laying around.

But those aren't really parties, more like really bad clubs that only first years go to. The actual parties at my school generally provided alcohol with requested, but not required BYOB.

My school literally did it. Every frat party did. Of course they had communist lines to get shit beer, but still. But yeah, those are more like clubs than parties. Definitely not what this topic is about.

Also I can't imagine a college party where the hosts are so poor they need to sell tickets to buy beer. All our frats were rich kids trying to seem cool, so a couple hundred bucks here and there didn't meant anything. They just wanted the biggest party, and apparently free warm kegs of keystone and vodka kool aid was their master plan for that? Not the smartest bunch I guess.

From Western Canada (Calgary), I can confirm

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, or maybe it's me being in a family and circle of friends where everyone drinks, but me, and pretty much everyone I know, will BYOB to basically everything - the possible exception is maybe small family dinner parties (but even then I'm usually bringing something). If I go to a friends dinner party I'm definitely bringing booze, and so will all the guests, but the host will generally have something on hand.... definitely not enough to support the party though. I'm 32 now, so if I'm hosting something I'll definitely have something on hand, generally lots, but in my teenage years and young adulthood, if you didn't bring enough you better hope your friends like you or hope you're near a liquor store, because you'd be SOL otherwise.

In Eastern Canada (Halifax) and yeah, agreed on all fronts. I mainly attribute it to the insane price of liquor we pay here. Also it's courteous to offer rids to the liquor store for anyone who still needs booze, and also because we can't sell Liquor in corner stores and gas stations like in America.
