People who think movies have only gotten worse need to check out a little era known as the 50s and 60s

Those two decade produced more shitty B movies than you can imagine

The problem is that most people feel like the later 60s and the 70s produced a lot of artistic films that were masterpieces, while the 80s and 90s tended more towards blockbusters and action films, but the industry as a whole is no longer really capable of the same highs it used to hit on a somewhat regular basis.

In a way, film is exactly the same as the current gaming industry - most of the major massive studios see the business AS a business and keep churning out financially successful but creatively bankrupt mega-titles, while the indie scene is where you'll find most of the actual creativity, but where you'll also find a ton of amateurish and/or pretentious garbage that tends to drown out the worthwhile alternatives.

It's that polarizing effect that makes it seem like both movies and games are always crap now, because you really aren't seeing that Venn diagram crossover between "brilliant" and "mainstream financial success". Which is why the rare example that does sort of straddle that line always seems to be such a huge deal when it happens - we're not used to seeing it any more.
