The original mechanism was for the data to be stored in the N64's RAM so that it would be held over while swapping out the cartridges, but changes in how the N64 handled RAM storage/data meant that the newer models wiped data too quickly for anyone to swap the cartridges in, so the whole thing was abandoned.
