But it's also implied in later stories that at least some of her bravado was all bluster anyway. Sort of like how it's canon that Peter tends to be a quippy jackass as Spider-Man because half the time he's scared shitless and is sort of trying to overcompensate (though later on, he mostly does it because he realizes it pisses off criminals and makes them easier to beat). Early MJ stories tend to revolve around the idea that she's trying to win Peter over in the face of tons of competition (keep in mind, for all that teenage Peter is usually portrayed as a loser, he had like half a dozen girls chasing after him on a regular basis).
