Honestly you'll be in a much better position at a lot of companies in the STEM field than other jobs you'll have. Especially a lot of tech companies with good benefits and work/life balance. Employers 'owning' you is kind of the name of the game, but it's not always that bad. Starting your own company is an unreasonably high bar to set. Very few people do that, and even fewer do it successfully. It's not all or nothing of you achieve the maximum human potential or you're a loser.
