The debate wasn't it was unfriended it was that they had all of their carriers (thanks for this info revelation 34) away during the attack. Well if they moved all of their units form the base it be too obvious to the enemy. Just seemed like a military strategy to sacrifice some units for the greater good. They got the moral support and a reason to join the war.
