There seems to be a weird conservative strain of thinking anyone vaguely on the left doesn't truly hold their convictions, and is only holding them for popularity. To me this just looks like jealously over having opinions that aren't publicly mocked. I don't get it. Considering I first learned the term from liberals who were applying it to conservatives, the claim that it's a conservative term rings hollow. Secondly, it's not a matter of "truly holding convictions" as it is superficially endorsing a conviction to demonstrate how "good" they are and to get over with people.
