It's pretty annoying how even non-degree jobs are becoming like this, but I still see some where you can just go in and talk to somebody. And a lot of them have open hiring events. There's also the kiosks in store, though I'm not sure those are any different than the normal online app, and if anything are probably just harder to use than your own computer.

As somebody who's looking for jobs in tech, it's even worse there. I'm not sure there was ever a time in recent memory where you could apply anywhere but online (assuming you didn't already have a contact at the company). It's not like you can just walk into a tech company and talk to somebody about working there and have the conversation get anywhere, which you could probably do at a lot of retail jobs even if you'll still end up having to apply online.

Applying online does work sometimes, but it's a very low success rate. It could work with a few changes. Let's get rid of these multi-step application forms where you have to fill out stuff that is already in your resume. Instead make it one page: Basic contact info, EEO information and a resume/other attachments section. These companies also need to stop leaving up postings for jobs that have long since been filled/never existed in the first place. I know some of that is done so they can meet labor/EEO hiring laws, but I bet a lot of it is just garbage left from laziness.
