to me a hobby game is like... warhammer. where the majority of the "activity" isn't actually playing the game, but rather painting pieces, building armies, and reading up on tactics and the setting. CCGs are like that, too

but that might be a limiting definition

i guess with chess you would spend a lot of time studying up outside of the game
