Nominator: handsomeboy2012 (11/15)

It's probably a coincidence, but this is one of the many songs I nominated over at Se7en's ranking topic. Which makes it the exact opposite of what I was looking for. </.<

This song was a big enough deal that I remember seeing actual commercials for it during American Idol, advertising it as being exclusively on iTunes. The song was so great that I just had to have it; I listened to it so many times, looked up all the theories on who the song was about (Napoleon was the lead theory at the time, though I haven't checked in years), and was slightly obsessed with the song.

Not obsessed enough to ever listen to another Coldplay song because I'm quite happy with just the one, but still about as obsessed as I had ever been with a song.

Now, it's still a great song, but one I know too well. I'd never avoid listening to it, but it's nothing I'd ever go out of my way to listen to either.

Also, in the unlikely event you were trying to pick a song I had nominated, you made an error. This would probably be the lowest scoring song I nominated at Se7en's topic; I've freely admitted that it was between "The Stand (Man or Machine)" or "Lady Stardust" for favorite song I submitted for that ranking, but also, I didn't...honestly expect to get this one nominated successfully.

I was in a hurry to submit nominations, spent many hours trying to find any song from the decade to nominate, and threw this one out expecting it to be disqualified. An award winning song that was big enough that commercials were created to hype it up? I figured it would just buy me a day or two while I waited for the rejection.

....then it got in and is well on its way to being the highest ranked song I nominated over there, which...okay, sure, I'll take it. It is a song I like and super popular, which is one of the judging criteria over there, so sure. I don't regret nominating it. But...uhh...if you were trying to pick songs you already knew I liked, you could do a lot better than the one that was sort-of an accident!

[FINAL NOTES: Of course, there are some songs I knew quite well that got better rankings than this. The problem with this song, and the one ranked above it, is that I already loved it to death; after you've obsessed over a song for several years straight, it's kinda lame to run into the song again when you're looking for something different.

The trick is to find a song that's familiar enough to be nostalgic, without being something I've heard thousands of times. "This Old Heart of Mine" would have done incredibly well because while it's a great song that I heard a lot, I hadn't heard it in so long that I was incredibly excited to hear it again.

Ooh, now that YouTube is on a 60s kick, it just hit me with "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"!

Now see, that's how you do nostalgia. I can't be nostalgic for Viva la Vida because it never left. It's on all my computers, mp3 players, playlists, and pops up on the radio periodically. It's omnipresent.]
