Spoiler alert: they were treated like shit. To pick one example out of millions, Robert E. Lee, when he caught two slaves that had attempted to escape, had them scourged until the flesh on their back was literally hanging off in tatters. Not content with that, he then had the wounds washed in brine to make them extra agonizing.
