Up until Clock Tower 3, the Clock Tower games were niche point-and-click survival horror adventures that relied heavily on established horror tropes, placing you as the final girl in a slasher film. With multiple endings, a memorable villain, and scary cinema-like scenes, the games built up a devoted fanbase that carried across two sequels. A flawed Clock Tower: Ghost Head, followed by Human Entertainment going out of business in 2000, seemed like a death knell for the series, but Capcom scooped up the licence along with Sunsoft and announced Clock Tower 3 in 2001. Whereas Clock Tower deliberately deviated from mainstream survival horror games like Resident Evil, Clock Tower 3 embraced a new direction, dropping the point-and-click affair for a fully 3D fixed-camera horror adventure. Along with this gameplay change came a new direction in tone as well, and the game became less slasher film and more experimental and original, with a time-hopping adventure and elements taken from anime including a magical girl transformation, comedic elements, and over-the-top exaggerated characters. While this may sound like a mess to some, the core gameplay here is still strictly Clock Tower, as each area has its own pursuer and you must hide and avoid them at all costs. The game still manages to be scary thanks to this, making the lighter elements more easy to swallow and providing a lot of fun to the overall narrative. Although the game remains a cult classic, Capcom's attempt to modernize an antiquated series from slasher cliches to batshit-insane originality still stands as one of the best sequels in a horror game franchise ever.
