As the first X-Files monster of the week, Tooms started an intense and terrifying legacy of X-Files episodes that made the series as memorable as it was, saving the show from just being known as "that alien series". With his powers to "squeeze", elongate, and contort, Tooms proved a horror monster format could work on the small screen and be just as terrifying as a feature length film. The effects used to make Tooms do his squeezing magic are great for the time, and Tooms' slimy appearance makes scenes like the vent attack on Scully claustrophobic, disgusting, and of course, super creepy. Tooms is one of the only recurring monsters in the entire series, being released from confinement in his second appearance. Coming back even more hungry and dirty, it avoided retreading earlier scenes for even more impact scares before his eventual demise. This reappearance would not have worked for every monster which is why the series did it sparingly, but I think it further cemented Tooms' legacy and place in the series as proof the series wasn't afraid to get dark and absolutely frightening.
