It seems like every genre and era of horror has its own parody or satire that comes along at the perfect time to magnify genre tropes and take them down a notch. Zombie films have Shaun of the Dead, slashers got Scream, and Young Frankenstein represented the first wave of horror, the Universal Monsters. Like every good parody should, Young Frankenstein shows much love for the genre, with a healthy does of cynicism to go along with it. The film is made almost exactly like a 1930s classic, including a black-&-white shoot, the style of opening credits used, and other techniques like fades to black and wipes. As the title would suggest, the film is primarily based on Frankenstein, but it's not about Victor this time, it's about his grandson Frederick Frankenstein, who inherits his grandfather's Transylvanian estate. This is one of Gene Wilder's all time great performances, portraying Frederick with the sort of manic that would make Colin Clive proud, but also imbuing his character with humor and neuroticism that makes him distinct from the classic mad scientist. My favorite part of the film though has to be Marty Feldman's Igor, an absolute riot who breaks-the-fourth wall constantly, probably has a fake hunchback, and has hilarious scenes, like when he stands in for dead heads, or how he insists on his name being pronounced EYE-gor. Frederick's relationship with the creature here is also unique, as he actually cares about his creation, even sacrificing some of his mental capacity to make the monster normal. To me, this seems like the perfect commentary on the name confusion between Frankenstein and the monster, especially since names are a heavy source of jokes throughout the film. To describe every hilarious thing in this movie would be doing it a great disservice, go watch it for yourself and immerse yourself into the one of the most fun and affectionate parodies ever made.
