I don't think there's any denying at this point that Leon has become the face of the Resident Evil series. Just look at the massive applause Leon got for his appearance in the Resident Evil 2 remake trailer. He has become an instantly recognizable gaming icon with appeal for nearly all-audiences, whether you enjoy the vulnerable and unsure rookie cop of RE2 or the bonafide wise-cracking badass in RE4 and beyond. His character growth throughout the series feels tangible and real, as is his relationship with other characters in the series. His ongoing love saga with Ada Wong is the one true romantic subplot we have in the series, as the two get only closer and closer ever game despite their often conflicting goals. Similarly, Leon grows in confidence over each appearance, from a rookie to a professional, learning from his experiences in Raccoon City and with mentor figure Jack Krauser. Even RE4 shows Leon has some things left to learn, as he strikes out with women across the board and more seriously, becomes a little more cynical after betrayals from Krauser and losing several friends along the way. Skipping ahead a bit, that's when we arrive at last year's animated film Resident Evil: Vendetta, which shows Leon down and depressed, even suffering from alcoholism as the many biohazards he has faced wear down on him. Sure, this is the same movie where Leon also rides a motorcycle down a highway and blows up several innocent cars while fighting a pack of Cerberus, but the depth in Leon's character here proves his stories aren't anywhere close to done. I love Leon just as much for his corny jokes and badass scenes in RE4 as i do for all his character growth throughout the series.

And, as we go back to the beginning next year, back to Resident Evil 2, it's the best time to reflect on how we got to this point, from Leon's humble beginnings as a rookie cop who had the worst first day of all time, and revel in the origins of one of my favorite characters of all time.
