Topic	Can't stop picking up everything in Fallout New Vegas. Dreading FO4 already.

So, they can pick up stuff while you do other things. Or they can pick up stuff while you also pick up stuff. And they give it to them. Haha. And I agree that with settlement building, you can use a good amount of that stuff.
