Write-Up:
It seems right off that I don't share the same esteem for this classic as the internet as I found it listed on several different "greatest songs of all time" lists and Total Guitar magazine even ranked it #4 for one of the greatest guitar riffs ever but um... I sort of disagree. Sure it's notable but it's annoyingly redundant if you've ever had to trog through this song a hundred times in Guitar Hero which I did back in the day. I understand the sentiment because of the impact the song had on the industry when it came out but it's sort of aged poorly imo. The song details an actual event that took place where the band had been set to play at a casino and during a Mothers of Invention solo some twit fired a flare gun setting the cloth ceiling of the building on fire causing the whole place to burn to the ground which is amazing when you realize that even though the entire casino complex was destroyed, not a single life was lost in the fire. The band watched the fire from their hotel window and that night the Bassist had a dream of the smoke spreading out over the lake that the Casino had been built on giving birth to the song's title.
