Write-Up:
New Genre, New Artist, very old song. While I do like the message and concept of this song it just doesn't thrill me like I'd imagine it did to folks back in the 70's. This song was originally recorded by the Temptations in 1969 but they were concerned about their image and possible controversy around the song and never released it as a single. A later version recorded with Edwin Starr was however released and the tune was given an upgrade with a James Brown vibe. It topped the charts of course as it was a protest song during times of protest and the Vietnam war and incidentally would become one of the most popular protest songs ever recorded. After 9/11 there were 161 songs that were banned temporarily from radio play (for political reasons I'm guessing???) and this was one of them. Several artists would eventually cover the song including Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Bruce Springsteen.
