Link (Zelda)

Rating: 89 out of 100

Link is partially a player window into a game world, something that I think is hard to accomplish across multiple generations without massive overhauling. I think it's a testament to the creators and designers of Zelda games that this system continues to appeal thirty years in. But Link is also a legend of folklore that most of us want to believe. The once and future king. The hero that rises in the time of crisis. Link is an antibody response to the illness of Ganon as it rearises and spreads across the Land of Hyrule. One of my favorite concepts is to take a natural archetype and say, "There is a reason this is an archetype" right in the middle of the story. Link is unabashedly party to that sort of storytelling. Legend of Zelda is about Link because the story needs a hero both in the story and of the story and for the story. On multiple levels, the concept of Link, the concept of you as a player, the concept of a savior, recurs because it's the natural function of Hyrule and a natural function of longterm storytelling. I love it.
