Sekai means world. Isekai means another world. It's a genre about characters going to another world. While technically any space show that goes to mars might count it really means going to essentially another universe. Something like inuyasha that is technically time travel is kinda borderline. I'd call it an isekai because the world is different enough to the modern world but I feel an argument could be made for either side really.

It really exploded since SAO came out. Before that it was frequently shoujo like escaflowne or twelve kingdoms for whatever reason. Now it's in it's modern JRPG style fantasy world for the most part.

Back to inuyasha, it IMO contains the important element. Learning about a new fantastical setting through the lens of someone from our setting. Just my thoughts on it though.

I feel like they don't make shows in the style of inuyasha anymore. I thought it was a really enjoyable set up. A real escapism type of show about someone from our world literally escaping to adventures in another world. It seems the adventure format died with weekly shonen or something. I suppose made in abyss actually had the adventure format and I loved that show for it even if it was a little too grim to serve as a pleasant escapist fantasy.

The other 2 I can really think of with the format are one piece and pokemon. A group of people traveling the land seeing new places and having adventures. I really wish there were more of that or really even one solid example of it as I think all the shows I mentioned have significant flaws.
