At least fifteen years ago it was the case where people moved to this desert for low housing costs, and spent those savings or more on car-related payments to get to and from their places of employment. (I had lived in Salt Lake City for a couple years where it was nice) i'm guessing you are either in the San Fernando area, or the Antelope Valley?
