If the point is that it reinforces "traditional" gender roles in our society then sure (which is not how I interpreted the implied criticism initially). That's a fair point I guess.

It re-enforces the idea that the role of men in a family with young women is to gatekeep their relationships, instead of treating them as independent people capable of managing their own lives
