I think I oppose the idea of politicians resigning for non-political reasons. Impeached, sure. Resigning is a breach of their duty to the people who elected them. On the other hand, if a politician makes campaign promises and then breaks them, it would be appropriate to resign and call a special election.

Best way to imagine it is as a scale that can also go negative. Northam is at most 0. Steve King is somewhere way further off to the left on the number line.

And you can also simplify that to a binary <= 0 (Totally Unfit for office)/> 0 (Not totally unfit for office)

I think it's a very weak case to try and paint that as actively suggesting to prevent the girl in question from making her own decisions.

There's reinforcement of unequal gender roles which are implicit in the way the statement is constructed, so if that's your point then fine, but the most direct meaning here is closer to what FD said.

Of course it isn't "actively" trying to prevent the girl to make her own decisions, but it subtly reinforces that narrative. It's a perfect example of a historically harmless statement that, when you think about it, is low-key sexist!

It's the kind of quaint, antiquated thing your grandpa might say to you out of "good intentions" that kind of crosses a boundary.
