Sooooo...he meets a 13 year old girl, and the first thing that comes to his mind to say - not to her, but about her to her brothers - is about sexual assault. And this is somehow normal and OK and accepted by a lot of people.

Honestly while what Fairfax actually did was worse, I feel like Northams response to the whole thing damages his ability to govern in good faith even more, because his ignorance to the issues and their effects has persisted

Its a terrible situation all around though

I think I oppose the idea of politicians resigning for non-political reasons. Impeached, sure. Resigning is a breach of their duty to the people who elected them. On the other hand, if a politician makes campaign promises and then breaks them, it would be appropriate to resign and call a special election.

They are completely different. But they are all fit for office because they were all elected to those offices. The fault, if there is any, must lie with the voters, or with democracy.

Note: if the voters are presented with 2 awful choices they can't really be blamed. But if that wasn't the case for Steve King, then any blame or credit must go to the voters - the boss.

Best way to imagine it is as a scale that can also go negative. Northam is at most 0. Steve King is somewhere way further off to the left on the number line.

And you can also simplify that to a binary <= 0 (Totally Unfit for office)/> 0 (Not totally unfit for office)

though yeah pointless debate either way. Saying one is worse than the other and then saying they're equally bad is dumb.

They are really different for precisely that reason. The voters were well aware of Steve King's positions when they voted him back to Congress.

I think on the "**** Biden has said" scale, that's pretty low.

what that says about "**** biden has said" is left as an exercise for the reader

What Jakyl has said about the implications/reinforcements of the statement are true and I wish Biden had not said it because ugh... but personally I file it down under "Biden's thinking is still back in like the 50s or whatever and has clearly not learned anything that progressives are trying to tell him" which is bad and why I desperately want someone else to be the nominee (Warren-mentum is real. Believe.) but wouldn't make a hypothetical list of Biden quotes/incidents I'd make to illustrate the point.

The implied meaning of "keep the guys away from [X]" is "there are bad people who will attempt to take advantage of [X]'s naivety, and you should try to protect [X] from those people". I think it's a very weak case to try and paint that as actively suggesting to prevent the girl in question from making her own decisions.

There's reinforcement of unequal gender roles which are implicit in the way the statement is constructed, so if that's your point then fine, but the most direct meaning here is closer to what FD said.

Of course it isn't "actively" trying to prevent the girl to make her own decisions, but it subtly reinforces that narrative. It's a perfect example of a historically harmless statement that, when you think about it, is low-key sexist!

It's the kind of quaint, antiquated thing your grandpa might say to you out of "good intentions" that kind of crosses a boundary. Very on-brand for Biden and why people find him likeable but also a great example to point out for Biden detractors who are against having another president whose worldview is "shit grandpa says."
