Honestly I wish there was some way to build a "deck" of things you wanted or a way to ban units from your personal pool. Like, idk, spend 2x the gold that it takes to buy a unit to make sure they never show up again.

That's not how it works. There's a pool of heroes. The more brawny and warrior units you get, the less chance you have of finding them in a pool to random. So your result is actually expected somewhat to happen. I forget exactly how many of each unit exists but if someone has a 3 star axe your chance of making a 2 star axe is extremely slim.
