I feel like he sorta just gets forced through character arcs and if you just take it at face value it works, but it ends up hurting the character for me. Probably a victim of bad writing more than the concept inherently being bad-- if they tried to do less with him he'd be a lot better. Early game Zidane is fine and he progressively gets worse until the awful You're Not Alone scene which really encapsulates everything wrong with the character.
