It wasthe return of 3D, which bumped the gross up significantly, it was the return of James Cameron (who held the record already with Titanic), it was a visual spectacle you had to see with your own eyes, and it had a lot of oscar buzz. It also dominated the media for months and had a pretty great release date. On which subject, it is really impressive that Endgame beat it while coming out in summer. --- I just decided to change this sig.
